Lawrence (Larry) Bamberger was born and raised in Los Angeles; his father Mr. Max Bamberger was also an LA lawyer. He became a member of the State Bar in 1962 after graduating from the USC Law School in Los Angeles. He went back to Gould for an L.L.M. He is a double Law Trojan. His L.L.M. thesis is on Workers’ Compensation Law.
As a civil trial attorney, he retired from State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF) as the most senior attorney in the company at the time with over 50 years of service.
He attended the two big rival LA colleges/universities which give him an interesting background as well. In my opinion, “LArry or LAwrence is LA”, a great Angelino.
Larry served in the USAF during the draft; he served in the USAF Reserve for about 10 years subsequently. After being an attorney, he joined the USN as a lawyer, he’s a retired Navy JAG, and he also is a retired USN Commander. He outranked the Honorable Arizona Senator John McCain who was a USN Lieutenant Commander.
Larry had the special opportunity to practice law in California civil courts (mostly of his career as a Workers’ Comp. defense attorney) and in military tribunals as a Navy JAG during his at least 20 years of combined military service (USAF/USN).He also participated in the U.S. Army ROTC program when he was an undergrad student at the UCLA.

I can humbly and gratefully say that it is because of Larry Bamberger that I am an attorney. I was so lucky to meet Larry at the WCAB in DTLA, on the State Building on 4th Street and Broadway, when he was a SCIF trial attorney. I was a Workers’ Comp. paralegal. Tennis was the thing that brought us together; we both love the game. I was recruited into his tennis group, and although he would deny that the group was his, we all knew. He instructed me to show up to play at the tennis courts in Studio City the next Saturday morning. So, I showed up. At that time, I gave Larry the nickname “the wall” - he would return practically any tennis ball thrown at him. Our friendship began to blossom. Upon learning that I can speak Spanish, as it is my native language, I was met with a “Carlos you have to go to law school” from Larry. Despite his encouragment, I couldn’t go to law school immediately the way he wanted. So I made changes and sacrifices. I began to attend law school in Downtown LA after my WCAB morning, and afternoon hearings.
After years of blood, sweat, tears and toil, I passed the Baby Bar. Larry was extremley proud of me and my achievement he took me out to lunch (haha!!). Then the nightmare experience started with the Bar Exam. After each negative result, Larry would continue to motivate me by saying “you are down, but you are not out.” I was walking the path of Mr. Max Bamberger, his father who also attended a night law school after his day job at the Southern California Edison Co.
Though he doesn’t show it, I know that Larry is incredibly proud that I am a practicing attorney. I’ll be eternally grateful to him. He was so right saying “you are down, but not out.”
In Larry’s words, “and, the rest is history.” I am a lawyer today. Larry was and continues to be the most influential and supportive person to me. It is because of him that I am where I am today. So, at this point, I think that it’s fair that Larry would say “and, the rest is history.”
THANKS A MILLION LARRY. THANKS TO THE GLORY OF GOD THAT YOU SAW ME BEEN ADMITTED TO THE STATE BAR OF CALIFORNIA (HALLELUJAH).
